The year is almost over… We’re happy to say this has been a big year for “Young Blood: Evil Intentions”! We’re excited beyond words that the movie is starting to get around! To be honest, we consider it a miracle that the movie was completed in the first place! Here are a few highlights from the past twelve months…
As you may have guessed, independent Filmmakers have to work much harder to get exposure for their films than a Major Motion Picture Studio would. As a matter of fact, 90% of all media is owned by six companies, that is everything we read, watch and listen to: News-Corp (Fox, Wall Street Journal, New York Post), Disney (Miramax, Pixar, ABC, ESPN), Viacom (Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, CMT), Time Warner (Warner Bros, HBO, CNN) CBS (Showtime, 60 Minutes) and General Electric (Comcast, Universal Pictures, NBC,). Of course these Major Studios took decades to make it to the top and they have no intention of giving up their spot as the king conglomerates. To order to keep their spot, major film studios own many theaters, a practice that at one time was illegal. That is just one of the preventative measures film studios use to create a giant fortress so to speak to stop independent movies from being shown. Try to imagine the board game of Monopoly, but you just entered the game with little or no money and the other players already have all the properties bought with little houses and hotels on it and all that is left on the board is Baltic and Mediterranean Avenue but you were just happy to play the game and have people cheer you on. We’re proud to be part of the 10% that can bring you something a little different! With all that being said, we would’ve been lucky just to have “Young Blood” play in one or two theaters.
With a premier date of September 21st, 2012, we had played our movie at every theater in Martinsville by the end of the year including the historic Rives Theatre, Hollywood Cinema and Movie Town. In March, 2013, “Young Blood” had it’s first showing in North Carolina at a/perture cinema in Winston-Salem. The following month on April 24th, the movie branched out farther and was presented in Roanoke, VA at the Grandin Theatre. After playing the movie in Virginia and North Carolina, we began knocking on the doors of film festivals. In May, we were proud to have our movie presented at Sci-Fi Valley Con in Altoona, PA over 300 miles away from our hometown. As spring turned into summer, Martinsville witnessed the emergence of 17-year cicada; taking advantage of the opportunity, we started production on “Invasion of the Killer Cicadas”. In July, “Young Blood: Evil Intentions” received one of it’s biggest honors to date and was listed as an official selection of Fright Night Film Festival!
In August, we decided to distribute “Young Blood” ourselves despite the enormous challenges and risks involved. We settled on the official release date of Oct 5, 2013 and to celebrate, we had an anniversary screening at Hollywood Cinema that will hopefully become an annual event. We wish everyone a happy new year as we head into 2014 and we hope to keep bringing you fresh material!
